Native American Acoma thin-walled olla, white slip, checkered Greek key design, with quails decorating the rim, created and signed by Melissa Antonio.

Melissa Concho Antonio was born in 1965. She is a member of the Red Corn and Sun Clans of Acoma Pueblo. She is the daughter of Gilbert and Lillie Concho. Melisssa learned as a child to make pottery from her mother. After marrying Daniel Antonio, she began working with his mother, Mildred Antonio.

After winning her first awards, First and Second Place, in 1992 at the New Mexico State Fair, Melissa continued on an annual string of awards until 1997. Returning to the winners circle in 2001, Melissa she won a Third Place award at the State Fair and a Second Place award at Eight Northern Indian Pueblos Arts and Crafts Show.

But she did notretire, bringing home a First Place award in the 2018 21st Annual Prescott Indian Art Market.

Additional Info

Melissa Antonio, of the Red Corn Clan and the Sun Clan, was born at Acoma in 1965. At the age of 23, she had become an outstanding pottery artist, following in the hand coiling tradition with intricate black on white patterns. Her pottery is created according to the methods of her pueblo ancestors. Occasionally, she will add a band creature or kokopelli silouettes around the pots the creates, as with the Mimbres-style rabbits on this example.
