Gwen Setalla was born into the Hopi Reservation in 1964. She is a member of the Bear Clan and the Water Clan. She signs her work with "Aas-Ku-Mana", which is Hopi for Mustard Juice Girl.

Pauline Setalla, Gwen’s mother, started Gwen working with clay using traditional techniques when Gwen was 5 years old. Gwen always reflects on what she learned as a child, that creating a pot, brings it to life and that the maker of the pot breathes life into the pot. This commands the pot maker to treat the pot respectfully.

For Gwen, every every pot she creates is accompanied by a silent prayer of thanks for being blessed with this talent.
