Preston Duwyenie, Hopi, created this stunning apple-shaped seed pot in sparkly bronze micaceous slip, topped by a silver stopper using his “shifting sands” motif. Preston’s mark is barely visible on the base. 4" from base to tip of stopper.

Preston’s given name is Lomaiquilvaa–Carried in Beauty. A name he was given after his initiation ceremony, when a family friend carried him home.

Preston was born in 1951 in Hotevilla, on Third Mesa of Hopiland. Preston describes his childhood as being surrounded with beauty. After an interlude of school and working in Phoenix, he enrolled in the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe. Then, he attended Colorado State University in Fort Collins, where graduated with honors in 1984.

Ultimately, he gravitated back to the IAIA where he joined the faculty as a professor of traditional pottery and jewelry. In 1996, he chose to concentrate exclusively on his art.

Preston offers prayers to the earth while gathering his clay on his own. His inspiration is the beauty and strength of nature. While he uses pot-making techniques that have been practiced for centuries at Hopiland, his style is distinctly Preston Duwyenie’s. He is married to Debra Duwyenie of Santa Clara Pueblo, where Preston lives with her.
