P738 Native American Navajo Lorraine Williams olla. 6 3/4" x 4"

$125.00

Native American Navajo Vase by Lorraine Williams. Pitch-covered with incised design running horizontally around the base and rising diagonally around the throat to the opening lip area.

Lorraine Yazzie was born in 1985 and grew up in the Kayenta - Teec Nos Pos area. Her father was a traditional Navajo medicine man. Her mother was a Navajo herbalist. She learned to do weaving, beadwork and sand paintings, but she never put her hands in clay until after she married Rose Williams’ son, George Williams. (They later were divorced). During her marriage, she learned about creating traditional Navajo pottery from watching Alice and Susie.

Lorraine says she had epilepsy all her life. When she is making pottery, she says her epilepsy doesn't activate. She found that working with clay kept it away.

Lorraine makes tall jars and decorates them with serpentine bands of sgraffito and painted weaving designs. After firing her pots, she applies piñon pine pitch. Her base material is brown-colored Black Mesa clay. Lorraine prefers painted designs on her pots rather than fire clouds that may occur, often used on purpose by Navajo potters who build their fires to produce fire clouds. Preserving the purity of her designs and decorations takes priority.
6 3/4" x 4" #P738
