Native American San Ildefonso Pueblo pot in green and brown slips, with embedded heishi, 3 different birds in sgraffito, topped by a stopper. Acquired in 2004 from the erstwhile Andrews Gallery in Oldtown Albuquerque.

Russell Sanchez was born into San Ildefonso Pueblo in 1966. His grandfather was Abel Sanchez (Oqwa Pi). His grandmother was Tomasena Cata Sanchez. She was the sister of Rose Gonzales. The family had a history of artistic renown. Rose, for example, has been credited with bringing deep carving to San Ildefonso pottery.

When Russell was 12, Rose Gonzales got him started making pottery. Dora Tse-Pe, joined the group teaching and mentoring Russell. By observation he added Dora's pursuit of perfectionism to his growing skill set. He was also encouraged and inspired by Tony Da and Jody Folwell also were said to be sources of encouragement for Russell.

Guided and inspired by this formidable cohort of excellence, Russell was propelled to win “Best of” awards repeatedly at shows and exhibitions. As recently as 2022 he continues to blaze a trail of exceptional and innovative artistry.
