Native American San Juan (Okay Owenge) Pueblo Daubs vase, micaceous clay with orange color, feather pattern etching and a turquoise "eye." Acquired in 1993 from the collection at Albuquerque’s Indian Pueblo Cultural Center.

Dennis Daubs is part Jemez and part San Ildefonso. His mother is Gerri Gachupin Daubs, his siblings are Patricia Daubs and Steve Daubs. His great grandmother Maria Sanchez and his grandmother Elvira Gachupin inspired to him make pottery, an activity he pursued under the tutelage of Juanita Fragua.

His specialty is hand-coiled, sgraffito-scored red or black pottery. He mixes his own clay, shapes his pots, does his own sgraffito, fires his pots and polishes them in keeping with traditional pueblo techniques.

Native American Ohkay Owingeh (San Juan) Pueblo Tina Trujillo flat bowl in micaceous clay with tan slip and avanyu water spirit encircling the shoulder. Acquired at Wheelwright Museum’s Case Trading Post, Santa Fe, in 2000

Tina Garcia’s birthplace was Oregon where she was born to Lydia Tafoya of Santa Clara Pueblo in 1957. Tina’s father was Santiago Garcia, of San Juan Pueblo. When Tina was five the family returned to Santa Clara Pueblo. Tina’s grandmother was Severa Gutierrez Tafoya, her aunt was Angela Baca, and influenced by them and her mother, she was producing her own pottery when she was eleven.

After researching the collections at the School for Advanced Research in Santa Fe, Tina embarked on career as a Pueblo potter. She won numerous awards until her passing in 2005.

This pot is an unusual one for Tina as much of her pottery was large black ware. This pot was signed Tina G. Trujillo

Norman de Herrera is the son of Rosita de Herrera and the inheritor of an interesting history in pueblo pottery. In the late 1800s, San Juan Pueblo pottery disappeared. Pueblo residents stopped potting. Some say it was due to the growth of nearby Espanola and access to commercial vessels to meet their domestic needs.

In 1930, a study group was formed to re-start San Juan Pueblo pottery making, based on shards from the 1500s, which were turned up in excavations. A leader in that group, who became a noteworthy pottery producer, was Tomasita Montoya. She taught her daughter, Rosita de Herrera to make pottery, extending the production of pots in a style that had evolved from the “San Juan Revival” of 1930.

As the son of Rosita, Norman de Herrera has continued the tradition with what has been a limited number of pots to carry his signature. This is one of those.
